Leg vein consultations

Spider veins and small varicose veins on the legs are very common, especially with age, pregnancy and jobs that involve standing. A doctor’s assessment looks at what’s causing them and whether they need further tests.

All procedures carry risks and results vary. Read about recovery and risks below.

About

About leg veins

Veins carry blood back to the heart, using small valves to stop it flowing backwards. When those valves weaken, blood can pool and veins widen and become visible. Spider veins are small red, blue or purple veins near the surface. Varicose veins are larger and can bulge.

Larger varicose veins, or veins with symptoms such as aching, swelling, skin changes or ulcers, may need an ultrasound and a referral to a vascular specialist. Your doctor will tell you if that’s the case.

Recovery and risks

Every option carries risks, and your doctor will explain them in detail before you decide.

Recovery

If treatment goes ahead, you’ll usually wear compression stockings for a period afterwards and be asked to walk daily. Bruising and temporary marks are common and can take weeks to fade. Several sessions may be needed, and new veins can appear over time.

Recovery varies from person to person.

Possible risks

Bruising, temporary brown discolouration of the skin, small red veins appearing nearby, tenderness, and less commonly skin ulceration, allergic reaction, or blood clots.
