Collagen-stimulating treatments
Collagen-stimulating treatments, sometimes called bio-stimulators, are placed beneath the skin with the aim of prompting your body to make more of its own collagen over time. They’re used for gradual loss of firmness and skin quality on the face and some areas of the body. Every plan starts with a doctor’s consultation.
All procedures carry risks and results vary. Read about recovery and risks below.

About collagen-stimulating treatments
Collagen is the protein that gives skin its structure, and the body makes less of it with age. These treatments use materials that the body gradually breaks down, and that are intended to stimulate new collagen as it does.
Any change develops slowly over several months, a course of treatments is usually needed, and results vary. They don’t replace surgery for more advanced laxity, and your doctor will tell you honestly if another approach would suit you better.
Who it may suit
Adults with gradual loss of skin firmness or quality.
They may not be suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with some autoimmune conditions, with an active skin infection, or if you tend to form raised scars. Your doctor will review your medical history first.
Recovery and risks
Every option carries risks, and your doctor will explain them in detail before you decide.
Recovery
Expect swelling, tenderness and possible bruising for several days. You may be asked to massage the area for a period afterwards, and you’ll be told what to avoid before you go ahead.
Recovery varies from person to person.
Possible risks
Bruising, swelling, pain, lumps or nodules under the skin that can appear weeks or months later, infection, asymmetry, and rarely damage to blood vessels, which can affect the skin or, very rarely, vision. Your doctor will explain the risks that apply to you, how they’re reduced, and what happens if a complication occurs.
Who you’ll see
Collagen-stimulating treatments are always planned and carried out by a doctor.

Important information. All procedures carry risks. Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. Before any treatment you’ll have a consultation with a registered practitioner, who will explain the expected benefits, recovery time, possible side effects and complications, costs, and alternatives, including not having treatment. Take time to consider your decision. You may wish to seek a second opinion.
