Sunscreen isn’t just for summer
Most sun damage doesn’t come from a day at the beach. It comes from small amounts of everyday exposure, all year round, that add up over a lifetime.

Everyday exposure adds up
Hanging out washing, walking to the shops, sitting by a window or driving to work all count. In much of Australia, the UV Index reaches 3 or above for most of the year, even in winter and on cloudy days. That’s the level at which skin needs protection.
You can see the difference
Compare the skin on the back of your hand or forearm with the skin on your upper inner arm. The difference in lines, texture and colour is mostly sun damage. The same thing happens on the face, neck and chest.
Protecting your skin
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen on your face, neck and hands every morning.
- Reapply every two hours when you’re outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
- Check the UV forecast in the free SunSmart app.
- Add a hat, sunglasses and shade when you’ll be outside for longer.
When to see a doctor
Check your skin regularly and see your GP about any spot that is new, changing or not healing.
